SpinTunes #1, Round 1

I entered the new Song-FU(rip)-ish SpinTunes songwriting competition. The challenge was to "Write a song from the point of view of a superhero or supervillian". (that wasn't the exact original challenge, but never mind that). I know about as much about superheroes as I do about flying the Space Shuttle, so I had to do A LOT of research. The idea I settled on involves archenemies named Firestorm and Multiplex. Multiplex can make copies of himself that share his consciousness, and Firestorm is actually two people who have to come together to be in Firestorm mode. Simple, right. Due to technical problems, my song was late, so it is a shadow entry. You can check out the rest of the songs here.

Masters of Song Fu #3, Round 2 voting starts

Well, after the voting for the last round, it would be easy to get discouraged, since I got a grand total of 43 votes, which fell way below what I call "the line of suck". What that means, is, that if you figure out how many votes each person would have gotten if they were randomly distributed, I got (far) less than that. While Molly Lewis may be aiming to better her 649 votes, and Hank Green may well double that since he now has mentioned the contest one of his videos, I would be happy to just end up above the line of suck.

About the song itself. The requirement was to write a song lasting at least 1 minute-15 seconds using only ten unique words. There was much confusion and general unhappiness about the task among contestants, but I liked the challenge from the beginning and I wrote my song, entitled You and I, within five minutes of reading the challenge. Given all of the limitations, including my own, involved in the song, I really like how it turned out. It is posted to the right.

Based on the two songs I've heard so far, and little hints from some remaining contestants, this round of Song Fu promises to be a wacky one. Hear the songs here.

Song Fu #3 voting in progress

Well, Masters of Song Fu #3 is underway, and it's a good thing because I have not been recording songs as often as I planned without the pressure of a deadline. The task for the first round was to "WRITE A HAPPY SONG". I had a lot of trouble deciding on which idea to stick with, what instrument to use, etc., so I barely got my submission in, and it is very rough. My hat is off to my fellow contestants who composed NEW "happy" songs this past week! My submission, "As Happy As Me", is a mean happy song, and is posted to the right.

Wonder If She Knows

Track #2 is up for your listening pleasure. This song is about a time when I had just started dating a certain girl. She was out of state visiting a friend, and when some "bad stuff" happened, I called expecting her to eagerly volunteer to rush back to my side. She was being perfectly sensible, but it was kind of a kick in the gut to hear that we were not yet in that place yet where I should expect that of her. This song is what I heard between the lines while talking to her that day. "Wonder If She Knows" is a totally selfish, Wah! song, but I like it because I think I captured my feelings at the time, childish as they may have been.

P.S. It all turned out fine in the long run. We celebrate or 11th wedding anniversary this Wednesday!

Welcome one and all.

Welcome to my new music blog. As a result of the wonderfully rewarding experience I recently had writing and recording a song for the Masters of Song Fu competition (or exhibition, in this case), I will be posting a new song every few weeks, starting with my entry from Song Fu, The Mistletoe Ho Ho Ho. Thanks for stopping by and please do come back as will have a new track posted soon. Happy Holidays!
